As an historian four facets of my profession have always interested me greatly: (1) undertaking historical research and writing, (2) teaching history, (3) using new media, and (4) taking historical road trips. As an undergraduate at Harvard and a graduate student at Berkeley, I had many opportunities to practice my craft in those first two areas. Additionally I undertook some travel for research on a Ph. D. dissertation about Puritan ministers -- but with not nearly as muchroad time I have had more recently. And as for new media, there was very little back in the 1960s when I began my work in history. The media marvels of that age were microcards with imprints of early American books (really hard to read) and my first electronic typewriter, which could be coaxed into typing multiple periods or x's by my simply holding down the key.
